Class Descriptions

Forever Young & Senior Series  Preregister only.   Gentle Yoga for the person 60 & Up.  The class includes breathing, stretching, working on strength and flexibility in a manner that is suitable for the more mature body. Must be mobile to participate. Space available in Thursday’s class

Basic Yoga:  This class picks up after Yoga 101 and is also suitable for anyone who wants a more basic approach. You will work on the postures in more depth. You’ll become more comfortable with where your strengths are and how/where you may need to modify the pose. Perfect for beginners with no major injuries or anyone who prefers this more basic approach to a practice.

Chair Yoga:  Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that helps reduce strain on the limbs and joints. This class is suitable for everyone, but is especially helpful for those who may have difficulty getting up and down from the floor, are recovering from a physical injury, recent surgery, or those with a permanent disability. Most of the exercises and poses will be done sitting on a chair, or standing using the chair for support.  Other props may be used to bring safety and comfort to each student depending on their individual needs. Awaken areas of the body that have been inactive, soothe aching joints, and strengthen muscles, while calming the mind and uplifting the spirit in this fun practice.

Flow Motion:  This class accommodates a wide range of experience levels from beginner to students that have practiced for a long period of time.  We balance strength and flexibility while building endurance and improving breathing and posture. Newer students can refine foundational yoga postures while veteran yogis can play with variations. Pace is moderate; plenty of options for increasing or decreasing the level of challenges as needed.

Free Form Yoga: Free Form Yoga is an all-levels, alignment-based class. During the class, experiment with poses, props and flow/hold patterns, and see where the yoga takes you. Modifications will be offered, and variations on the poses will allow you to experiment with each pose in depth. Increase your knowledge of your own body and how it responds to the poses, align your breath with movement and above all, encourage a sense of play that will boost your mood and relieve your stress.

Fun Flow: This class is for everyone! Seniors, take advantage of the “senior series” rates; all others drop in or class card. Slow flow emphasizes alignment, breath, and FUN!

Just Yoga: This all-levels class takes off where Beyond Asana started. Explore poses, breath work and touch on yoga philosophy.  Deepen your understanding of why and how the poses are executed and what you can expect as you continue to practice consistently.

Karma Meditation: Each and every meditative experience is valuable. In Karma Meditation we nurture, balance, stretch, and strengthen the union of body and soul – that is yoga. Some techniques include: mindful meditation, mantra meditation, moving meditation, visualization meditation, body-scanning meditation, gazing meditation – and more! Let’s gently and deliberately move your spine, manage your breath, release and relax – and restore your soul. All you have to do is listen and observe the love that you are.  The FIRST Karma Meditation of each month will be a physical donation to a worthy cause: either a food drive, socks for the homeless, or the like. We’ll announce that each month. Every other Karma Meditation will be a free-will offering. The OCTOBER Karma Meditation is a food donation to Will County Humane Society.

Matwork: This class is inviting and invigorating. Its combination of yoga, Pilates and calisthenics changes daily, but the emphasis is always on lengthening and strengthening the body. You’ll work your core and link movement with breath. Sometimes additional props are used. All levels.

Mixed Level Hatha:  All Levels Class. Explore poses, breath work and build strength with a combination of movements and holds.  This practice helps you on many levels.

Restorative: This class includes gentle stretches, breathing, relaxation & simple movements to increase range of motion of the major joints. Restorative yoga uses props to support the body, allowing for deeper relaxation. This class is appropriate for anyone preferring to move more slowly or enjoys a quieter practice. All Levels.

Vinyasa Flow: This class is inviting and invigorating. It’s energetic, and the emphasis is always on lengthening & strengthening the body. You’ll work your core, linking movement + breath. Sometimes additional props are used. All Levels.

Yin: This quiet practice focuses on postures that stretch the connective tissue. Poses are held for a time, and rather than a typical practice using muscular strength, this practice relies on gravity and the breath to move you into the posture. All Levels.

Yoga @ The Fields: This all-levels class is set in a beautiful garden at The Fields, just west of the studio. Outside, you + nature and no props! Bring your own mat and beach blanket. $10 special rate. RAIN LOCATION: Just Breathe Studio

Yoga Your Way:  This class is appropriate for beginners, as well as more experienced students who want a slower paced class with a strong emphasis on safe and healthy body alignment. A wide variety of fundamental yoga poses will be explored which increase strength and flexibility and improve balance. The teacher will give options and provide guidance so that all students can participate safely. Everyone will work within their own ability.  Yoga Your Way is a variation of a traditional Hatha (physical practice) yoga class that works with you on the poses (asana), but without the quick flow of a faster-paced class. Yoga Your Way uses props when you need them, and teaches you to adapt the practice to your body in a way that promotes alignment and links breath to movement. The sequences move at a pace which allows you to check in with your body during the class and make sure you maintain proper form to keep your body safely in the pose.
